Almost done with rust repairs...

31/01/10 | by admin [mail] | Categories: General

Other than repairing the battery try, I’m pretty much done with rust repairs as of today.
Top corners of the front window have both been repaired.
Bottom corners of the rear window have both been repaired.
Both sides of the boot corners have now been done. After the battery tray repair, we should be ready for the rotisserie.

Rear end back together

Today was the day that the Mustang started to look like a car again.

There is still a little more spot welding to be done around the quarter panels, but I’d had enough for the day.

Rear filler panel

Rear filler panel is now done.
I had to do some repairs to each end of the parcel shelf where the window rubber seals due to rust. I used POR-15 on the brace underneath where the metal was bare from the factory, so this should stop any further rusting.

Next will be the left hand rear quarter put in place properly once the outer wheel arch arrives.

Doors lined up

Mustang guru came over again today and we got the door gaps sorted out. The left door has also been fitted up and lined up with the original quarter, so I can cut the old quarter out and use the door to line up the new quarter.

Door gap

In a previous post I mentioned the poor door gap on the right hand side of the car when fitting the new quarter panel. To counter this, I was advised to try using a heavy duty tie down strap from the shock tower, to a hook welded to the door jam to pull the door jam forward. My bike tie downs were not strong enough, so I bought a truck one from the hardware store and that seemed to do the trick. The door gap is much better now, but there is still a couple of mm difference, which is acceptable to me. I stopped going any further because the strap was starting to tear the metal. I have also started paint stripping the body.
