Creeping towards paint

Another day and creeping closer to paint.
Today we worked on aligning the bonnet which may still need a little work, and also doing the major filler work.

Really happy with how the 1/4 extensions are going to look.

This door gap and edge is better again. This gap was originally over 10mm before some help from Kerry and some final tweaks in the last few weeks.

We are hoping to finish off the filler next time around and start getting some hi fill on it in a couple of weeks time.

Paint prep Part 1

Had a panel beater come over today and start getting panels sorted out for paint. There is a lot more involved here than I was ever aware of, and he’s done a good job so far. There is still some more to do, and some of the gaps won’t end up perfect, but the aim for my car was always just a nice driver, so I’m happy.
It’s looking like a car now rather than just a bunch of panels bolted/welded together.
The gap on the back of this door still looks bigger than it should be, but compared to where it came from, it’s looking much better.

Will be a few weeks before any more is done, but it’s getting closer to colour.

I've finally got a steering wheel.

Power steering

Bought a reco saginaw pump for my power steering.
I modified an orignal bracket that was given to me to bolt up to the saginaw pump.

I need a long bolt now so I can bolt it to the head. After I have that, I can make up the second adjustment bracket once I know where the pump will sit.

I also bought a Blaster SS coil to suit my MSD 6A. I was never sure of the age/condition of the other one, but it did the job for a while anyway.

And last but not least… a dust cover for the car so it doesn’t keep getting covered in muck.

Fuel sender

It was a bit of fiddling around, but I got the Autometer fuel sender fitted to the Mustang.
It turned out the flange was pretty much the same diameter as the original ( 0.5mm in it), so I decided to modify it to fit.
First I TIG’d up the holes

Then I cut and bent into the right kinda shape. Because my fuel pump sits in where the original float would sit, I have to bend mine over to the side a bit.
I also had to change the angle of the rheostat, so I welded an extra piece on.

Once it was fitted to the tank, I removed the fuel pump and bent the arm a little more into the right shape. There is about 8L in the tank at the moment and its showing just above empty. I also clamped the float to the top of the tank and it showed full, so should be good to go!

Gauge woes

The gauges showed up on Wednesday, so thought I would have fun today putting them in. It turns out that the gauges were 3 1/8″ and my dash needed 3 3/8″ so the gauges went straight through the holes.

After contacting the seller to see if I could return them, I decided to just make a new dash fascia to suit the new gauges.
I removed the old fascia and used it as a template for the new one.

After getting rid of the scratches and “brushing” it with scouring pads, I mounted the gauges properly and wired them up.

Wheels arrived

New wheels were delivered today. No tyres yet, so they are not going to be bolted up.
Besides, there’s no use putting them on while the car is sitting around gathering dust either.

The old ones can stay on and get covered in paint.

New air filter

I bought one of those multi-step drills today. Damn they are good thing!
Used it to drill the hole in my new air filter base for the air temp sensor. I used a grommet in there to try and insulate a little to avoid heat soak from the aluminium base.
I also fitted the curved monte carlo bar. Even with the big MSD dizzy, I think a straight one will fit, so I might even buy some tube steel and convert my one into a straight one. Obviously I would have to remove it to take the dizzy out, but that’s not a job you hope to be doing very often anyway.
